What’s in a word? Acupuncture is derived from Latin and the literal translation is “needle prick” from “acus” and “pungere.” The ancient healing arts of acupuncture and oriental medicine are readily taught throughout the world.
To describe acupuncture, one must first get to the root of its historical backdrop. Dating back as far as 2,000 BC, this age-old art parallels the Han dynasty. Even earlier than that, acupuncture may have possibly originated almost 4,000 years ago, based on hieroglyphic findings and stone (bian) and ceramic acupuncture needles, which have been documented throughout the centuries.

Question by Kelly: How does acupuncture work especially in the ear?
I skimmed a little bit on acupuncture. I am really considering doing it! However my therapist mentioned her co worker that is a therapist too may do one too. She and I both want it! I do have depression/anxiety, and lower back pain. I am really hoping this can help me! I am wondering, how far in the ear do they go if they do? It won’t puncture the ear drum or anything right? I hear the needles are very tiny and you won’t feel too much and no scars
. Oh, my back pain is from scoliosis as well.
Silly, but can it help with osteoporosis? That would be nice!
lol I know it may not but who knows! I know after you have it done though you need to take it easy that day.

It may sound odd that inserting thin needles at certain points on your body can help you lose weight, but it’s done just that for many individuals. Results may not be obtained through physical means, but rather emotional means. Stress eating or binge eating are often the result of excessive stress and anxiety. These emotional disorders may cause some individuals to seek comfort by eating, which can lead to obesity in some cases. When coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise, it isn’t hard to see how stress eating can lead to obesity.
Acupuncture helps to relieve stress. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which have a relaxing effect on individuals. By undergoing acupuncture treatment, individuals often feel more relaxed and are able to relieve stress and anxiety, which thus helps them to control overeating or stress eating.

I have anxiety and can’t sleep at night. I actually think my anxiety is caused by the fact that I can’t sleep. I think all day long about how I’m going to have a difficult time sleeping at night. The night rolls around and there I am tossing and turning and not falling asleep. I have tried every over the counter medicine and hate them all because they give you the hang over feeling. My doctors all say it’s anxiety related so I went for acupuncture and it works great for how I feel during the day, but I still have a hard time sleeping. My acupuncturist (who’s also my friend) recommended that I take 5-HTP and says it will help me sleep. So far I’ve been taking a Xanax (0.5 mg) to help me fall asleep and it doesn’t work that well. I bought the bottle about a month ago and still haven’t tried it because I’m nervous it will be just another thing that won’t work. Has anyone tried this for sleep and had success?
