“Massage” has been practiced as a healing therapy in nearly every culture around the world for many centuries. It promotes our well-being by relieving muscle tension, reduce stress, and evoke a serene feeling. The term “massage therapy” encompasses many different techniques from Swedish to Shiatsu, but basically the idea of a massage therapy is to press, rub and manipulate the superficial and deep layers of our muscles and connective tissues using hands, fingers, forearms, elbows, and feet to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation.

Acupuncture has been around for ages. The Chinese belief about this treatment is that it helps to balance life energy in a person’s body, sometimes called chi or qi. Can it help you?

Acupuncture is a medical treatment which began in China many years ago. This energy is supposed to flow through meridians and when blocked can cause health difficulties. Western medicine has begun to utilize this discipline, as well, but for different reasons. Western practitioners believe it can be helpful when applied to pressure points located in nerves, connective tissue and muscles. Doctors have found it useful to tap into the body’s natural ability to handle pain and appropriate blood flow.

Throughout the past 33 years in private practice, hundreds of women have told me they felt that their current health problems started soon after the birth of their child. The child may have been her first or fifth, and might now be a teenager or even a grown man or woman, but the mother remembers the postpartum onset of her symptoms as if it were yesterday.

The symptoms that usually start within the first to twelfth postpartum months vary widely among mothers. A few of the most common are despondency and despair, chronic fatigue, sleeplessness, anxiousness, lack of confidence, loss of sex drive and passion, muscle and joint pains, unhealthy skin, hair and nails, digestive disturbances, bladder problems, heart disease, trouble breathing, and a host of troubling emotions and moods swings. A woman can be puzzled, frustrated, even embarrassed when she reveals symptoms that have plagued her for years. She may have shared her self–observations with doctors only to find that they were not worthy of an acknowledgment or comforting comment from her physician. Any attempt on her part to connect the birth of one of her children with those symptoms may have been met with skepticism or passed over. Yet, she can’t shake the feeling that something about that particular birth began her health decline.

A few months ago I had what I’m about 90% sure was an anxiety attack out of absolutely NO WHERE…Felt like I was having a heart attack. I couldn’t eat, focus, anything, just paralized, trembling, chest pains, felt like I was going to “lose it” for lack of a better term. Went out to my car, laid down there for about 45 minutes, felt ok enough to drive and drove home. By the time I got home I felt fine.

After that I felt fine again for a few weeks until I had another one, same situation just sitting in the office working but this time the issues never went away. It’s been months and EVERY DAY I feel like I’m on the verge of having another one. As a result mild agoraphobia is present (I dread meetings etc) and I’ve noticed a severe problem with motion sickness/stomach sensitivity to movement etc now that I didn’t have before (though I’ve never been fond of crazy roller coasters and/or heights, but it’s MUCH worse now – For instance, I couldn’t handle the space needle restaraunt in Seattle…made it to the table for about 5 minutes then had to go back down).

I need your opinions on acupuncture?

I take care of an 89 year old man who recently was told he should see an acupuncturist for his gastrointestinal discomfort. He has a gastrointerologist, and has had every test available to find something wrong. They can’t find anything.

I think acupuncture is a bunch of bunk! I get tired of all the various people in his life play doctor and sending him to various alternative situations. It is a waste of time.

Stress is making me sick… need help?

I have been sick 3 times within the last month, and I think stress could be the reason for it.

I used to get sick about once a year.. now im sick around 8 times a year. I do very intense working out, I am a kickboxer who pushes himself very hard when training. I work at a bar, and am currently in college in the city. I recently met a new girl I really like and I am barely making it through college.

I don’t know whats worse… being sick, having extremely bad chronic neck pain, or feeling stressed and depressed from it all. I have very high standards for myself, and when I dont meet them I have a tendency to beat myself up.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder of the muscles and associated soft tissue, including tendons and ligaments.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Muscle pain, which could range from mild discomfort to severely debilitating and is present either throughout the body or only at certain points is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia. The pain develops gradually and typically occurs in the shoulders, neck, lower back, rib cage, chest or thighs.

The presence of tender points, or tendons and muscles that feel tender when touched, is a key aspect of fibromyalgia. Tender points are usually located in the muscle or soft tissue of the neck, shoulder, elbow, knee, back, shoulder and hip. For a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, the patient should have uncommon tenderness in a minimum of eleven of the eighteen designated tender points.
