When the topic of women’s health care is raised, the first disease that comes to mind is probably breast cancer. But surprisingly, that’s not the number one health care issue confronting women today. In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. By knowing the most significant risks in women’s health care and what you can do to combat these health care issues, women of all ages can take a proactive approach to leading healthier lives.
The #1 Women’s Health Care Issue: Heart Disease More than 489,000 American women lose their lives each year as a result of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. In fact, more women than men die from heart disease each year. Until recently, little research focused on women and heart disease, but the good news is that’s no longer the case. From research into the effects of hormone replacement therapy on heart health to studies of how cholesterol-lowering medications work in women, there’s an unprecedented increase in the amount of information available to women working to live with and ward off heart disease.

A study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health found a 7-week acupuncture treatment helped many ease their chronic lower back pain. The patients volunteering for the study ranked their pain at least a 3 on a scale of 0 to 10 and were divided into groups. Some groups received usual care – medicine and doctor checkups. Other groups received usual care plus acupuncture. About 40% of volunteers receiving usual care improved. About 60% of those receiving usual care plus acupuncture improved. In acupuncture needles are inserted in specific points to get energy flowing. Unfortunately, acupuncture won’t work on the economy.
In May 2009 the Institute of Medicine issued new guidelines for how much weight women should gain during pregnancy. More than half of pregnant women don’t follow these guidelines; and unfortunately, more of them are heavier, older and have more pre-existing conditions than a decade ago – making extra pounds riskier. According to the guidelines, women with normal body mass indexes should gain 25 to 35 pounds; overweight women should gain 15 to 25 pounds; and for the first time there’s a recommendation for obese women. They should gain 11 to 20 pounds. Having a baby can be a weighty decision in more than one way.

Acupuncture is an alternative health therapy taught in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The technique dates back at least 2,500 years. The practice of acupuncture involves inserting needles into meridian points on the body. Manipulation of the needles is believed to promote health by balancing the opposite forces of ‘yin’ and ‘yang.’ Yin and yang flow along energy paths in the body. This ‘chi’ energy is sometimes calle Qi. Acupuncture is believed to clear natural blockages of this energy as it flows throughout the body.

I’ve been having panic attacks for the last 2 twos years now, they happen almost everyday. I was very depressed before they started happening, but since I haven’t found a way to deal with them I’m just continually sinking lower and lower. I’m crying everyday and I constantly think about suicide. I’ve started cutting, which is something I’ve never done. I’ve been on lots of anti-depressants, anti anxiety drugs, I’ve been to counseling, I’ve tried acupuncture, bio-feedback, basically everything. I feel like I’ve tried everything and I’m really considering checking myself into some place to get help, but I am very scared, since I have no ideal what happens at these places. Plus I’m hesitate since I don’t want to leave my family, especially during the holidays. Does it sound like I should check myself in? Or could somebody that’s ever been in a mental health hospital share their experiences and if it helped them?

Dealing with physical pain is a part of human life, from birth to death. Generally, most individuals do everything in their power to avoid aches, pains, and any discomfort. In today’s modern world, the medical field has provided individuals with many forms of pain relief, be it in the form of prescription medication or invasive surgery. Pain is something no one can avoid, though, and it is only with how we cope with malaise that becomes important.
That does sound incredibly morbid, but it is a fact of life. The body ages and, as it does; it begins to lose its vitality. Health, the environment, and genetics play a huge factor in how quickly the body deteriorates. Take for example a smoker and a non-smoker. Which do you think would be the one more at risk for wrinkles, lung cancer, or emphysema? A quick hint: Surprisingly, it is not the person out in the parking lot with a lit cigarette!
