Acupuncture in the Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Article by Groshan Fabiola

Ignored or regarded as ineffective in the past, alternative therapies have nowadays regained people’s interest, proving their great capacity to produce curative effects in persons confronted with a variety of diseases. Although most of the existing alternative therapies have recently proved very efficient in providing symptomatic relief to patients with various physiological or neuropsychological diseases, doctors still consider that parallel forms of treatment shouldn’t completely replace modern medical treatments. Most doctors claim that in order to obtain the best curative effects, one should combine medical treatments with alternative therapies, not to choose parallel medicine therapies over modern treatments or vice-versa.

One of today’s most popular forms of alternative therapy consists in acupuncture. This ancient oriental practice has proved very effective in relieving the symptoms produced by a wide range of neurological diseases, including fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a serious disease of suspected neurological cause that primarily determines pronounced impairments of the musculoskeletal system and neuropsychological dysfunctions such as depression. Fibromyalgia is manifested by chronic musculoskeletal pain, stiffness of the joints, generalized fatigue and sleep problems. Unfortunately, there is no specific cure for fibromyalgia at present and existing medical treatments aren’t very efficient in controlling the manifestations of the disorder.

This article revolves around the types of Acupuncture for fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is one of the five disciplines of traditional Chinese medicine performed in Asia for thousands of years. It became known worldwide from the mid-twentieth century and is now made accessible to a large number of patients. The practitioner works on the body’s energy by trying to restore the balance thereof by the insertion of needles into specific points, arranged on different acupuncture meridians listed on the human body. This practice is reserved for people who conducted the appropriate studies and known as “acupuncture”. However, it is possible for anyone to conduct small massage on acupuncture points to relieve some pain or discomfort of small daily? It can also improve the general condition in case of regular practice. In the early ’80s, Dr. Roger Dalet has helped put this simple and accessible to all, which is now known as acupressure, acupressure or digitopressure: stimulation of acupuncture points by the pressure of fingers.

These are still natural methods that use and treat the acupuncture points. However, acupuncture to treat fibromyalgia is more oriented towards the psychological health problems and deals with the fears, anxieties, phobias, addictions, pain (often caused by emotional distress as fibromyalgia), manias, allergies, traumatic memories, mourning, migraines and stress. The method has been developed by Roger Callahan (psychologist), especially played by Gary Craig (engineer, personal development coach) in the 90s.

I’ve tried NSAID’s, flexeril, steroids, neurontin, lyrica, numbing patches, vicodin and darvocet, heating pads, ice packs, hot tubs, regular exercise, and most recently acupuncture. Acupuncture gave me a modicum of relief the first 2 months, but then slowly began to lose it’s efficiency and is now not worth the money. (Not covered by insurance) This disease has me in tears every day and every night. Most days I have trouble functioning and living my life in a normal way. I’m sick, I’m tired, I’m depressed, and yes, I feel damn well sorry for myself. I doesn’t help any that there are still medical professionals that seem to give you a wink and a nod when you describe your symptoms; as if to say, “It’s really all in your head, but I’ll take pity on you and throw a couple of pain pills your way”. The stress of that kind of nonchalant treatment exacerbates my symptoms and angers me. I don’t want your pain pills, I want some action to help solve whatever is causing these symptoms to attack my body, Does ANYBODY have any new or innovative treatment or information on fibromyalgia that might give those of us who suffer from it hope, promise, faith that things might get better for fibromyalgia sufferers?

Ease fibromyalgia pain????!!!!!????

I am already on prescription Celebrex for my fibromyalgia, I have been since I was 20. (I’m nearing 30 now.) I also take Rozerem to try to get a restful sleep, otherwise I am in a vivid dream state all night and never hit deep sleep. Even with the Rozerem when I wake up feeling rested it is a big deal so I get really excited.

I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia when I was 15. I have been in pain since I was 12 and in 7th grade and constantly fatigued, sometimes with tingling in my hands, feet, and along my spine, what is probably the driest most sensitive skin on earth, always cold (since I had scarlet fever twice when I was 4).

my symptoms- 10 yrs. chronic neck pain not cleared up by months of PT/acupuncture/anti-inflamms.; headaches (muscle tension & migraine);
TMJ;
chronic joint pain – neck, back, hips, knees, ankles, toes;
constant total exhaustion & never feel rested after sleep;
depression/anxiety;
dry eyes, mouth;
very low exercise stamina;
joint pain worse after exercise, in morning;
IBS;
susceptible to ankle sprains (3 in 5 years);
sensitive to light/noise;
sensitive to hot/cold weather & humidity;
lack of concentration/focus.
There are also points on my legs that hurt a lot if pressed, but don’t correspond to any kind of injury – it just hurts and has for a long time.
The second part of my question is:
Has anyone who has this taken ACCUTANE? I’m trying to find a correlation because I have constant lingering problems due to accutane – chronic intercranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri), pressure/pounding in head, tinnitis, fatigue.
THANKS SO MUCH!
Hi, I don’t need people telling me to go see a doctor. That’s pretty obvious. Please only answer the question if you have fibromyalgia, know someone who does, are in the medical field, or just know about this condition. I will see a doctor, but after 10 years of annoying chronic pain, I thought I might get some people’s opinions about it. Don’t waste my time with trivial – go see a doctor BS! Thank you!!! ^_~

Combating Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Fibromyalgia symptoms are not easy to live with, in fact many people assume before they are diagnosed that they must be dying because they are in such pain. It’s true, with this illness there are days when you feel like you must be about 50 years older than you are, and other days where you feel like you will never recover. When you visit your doctor they will likely be able to ask you questions and even apply a small amount of pressure to specific areas of your body to help determine that this is the illness that you are suffering from. But, after diagnosis you may find that your doctor is not able to do much for the pain that you are experiencing.

Unfortunately the fibromyalgia symptoms are not limited to pain in various areas of the body. In fact, many people who suffer from the illness have pain all over their body. Another common complaint is severe headaches, extreme fatigue, depression, anxiety, and even guilt over the things that you are no longer able to do for your family and friends. If you don’t have a full appreciation for the severity of these symptoms you may be very hard on yourself, which can also cause you to become angered and frustrated with yourself as well as your doctors. It is very difficult not being able to enjoy the things you used to.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder of the muscles and associated soft tissue, including tendons and ligaments.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Muscle pain, which could range from mild discomfort to severely debilitating and is present either throughout the body or only at certain points is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia. The pain develops gradually and typically occurs in the shoulders, neck, lower back, rib cage, chest or thighs.

The presence of tender points, or tendons and muscles that feel tender when touched, is a key aspect of fibromyalgia. Tender points are usually located in the muscle or soft tissue of the neck, shoulder, elbow, knee, back, shoulder and hip. For a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, the patient should have uncommon tenderness in a minimum of eleven of the eighteen designated tender points.
