More than eleven million folks throughout The United States suffer from depression every year. This is a medical condition that affects the mind and will have lasting effects such as a sense of hopelessness, absence of ambition and an inability to concentrate. Although women ordinarily have this condition more than men do, you will recognize that age isn’t a factor. Contacting a mental help professional for example a psychiatrist can end up being extremely useful to getting proper diagnosis and also treatment. Here we are going to be taking a deeper look at depression in addition to some of the things that you can do to help treat this issue.

The majority of treatment options involves a mix of drug therapy and natural remedies for a thoroughly balanced physical and emotional state. Both doctors and psychiatrists will wind up prescribing anti depressants to most patients that are suffering from depression. Of course, regardless of what your doctor says about these medicines, and just how safe they are, it is always better to perform some research on your own prior to taking these medicines. A number of these medications can in fact make your depression even worse and may additionally end up causing feeling of suicide in some folks.

Treatment therapy is frequently prescribed with prescription drugs to help a particular person come to terms with issues, symptoms and techniques for coping with depression. These may be group or perhaps individual therapy sessions to speak about problems and also things which can wind up causing your depression to become worse. There are types of therapies known as expression therapies such as exercise classes that can also help you cope with this. Relaxation methods will help in bringing focus and serenity and you will recognize that breathing exercises and meditation are ideal forms of this.

Many people aren’t aware that their diet can be one thing which can be changed to help with depression. Individuals who have added vitamin B, zinc as well as fish oils to their diet have been in a position to lessen their depression and in many cases even defeat it. You ought to also be aware that getting plenty of exercise every week can also be a fantastic treatment. Alternate treatment options for instance acupuncture and also hypnosis can also be beneficial to help relieve symptoms of depression.

One thing I should point out is that before you start any sort of treatment or therapy for you depression you need to discuss it with a doctor or psychiatrist. You must realize that each person’s depression will be different from another’s when it comes to the severity. In the event that making use of supplements or significantly altering your diet, make certain to advise your doctor so those can be taken into account when setting up a treatment plan.

While there’s a lot of folks who let depression run their lives you need to be aware that there are treatments which will help you live a normal life. You should also keep in mind that the sooner you start seeking therapies the sooner you can start living this normal life that you want. Whenever you can you need to try to handle your depression without the need of drugs as many of these types of medications may have even worse effects on your general health.

Finding the best and quickest way to start treating your depression is essential, and if you would like to keep your treatment is safe as possible, then you should think about naturally treating depression and the methods that have proven to work. Everyone knows that there are many different antidepressants on the market and they have also been proven to work, but they also come with many side effects that most people actually can’t live with.

Another reason why many people with depression are choosing to begin naturally treating depression rather than taking medications is because the drug interactions of these medications can be severe. So if you are already taking a drug for high blood pressure, cholesterol, or any number of problems, you could find that your choices are really rather limited as to what prescrition medications for depression that you can take.

Why Prescription Medications Are Not Always the Best Choice

For some people, there are many reasons why naturally treating depression is a preferred method over standard prescription medication therapy. One of those reasons is that prescriptions are not cheap, even for those drugs that are sold as generic substitutes. If you don’t have a health insurance policy or a prescription policy, you may not be able to take medications on a long-term basis.

Another reason why many people choose not to take medications for their depression is because they interact with other medications. This can cause serious problems and you may be forced to choose between treating one condition or the other. In addition, there are many side effects that go along with these medications, so much so that a good number of people elect to stop taking their medications rather than deal with the side effects.

What Ways of Naturally Treating Depression Are There?

If you have decided not to use prescription medications to treat your depression or if you are looking for a way to naturally supplement the medications that you are already taking, then you will be glad to hear that there are many options. Alternative methods of treatment such as aromatherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and yoga have all been used for centuries as a way to help people with mental health issues.

What About Herbal Supplements?

There are also many herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort and Kava Kava that have been proven to bring about results in many people. These can be used on their own or in conjunction with other forms of natural healing methods. Ideally, they should be used while also working to rid your diet of foods that are highly processed, contain bleached flour or sugar, or have additives, chemicals, or colorings.

By adopting an overall healthier lifestyle, using herbal treatments and natural, more holistic treatments, and aslo adding in a little bit of exercise (which helps raise the body’s serotonin levels), you will be on your way to curing your depression without having to take medications. Naturally treating depression has been successful in many, many cases.

You might be surprised to know that it is possible to treat anxiety and depression yourself. But, in order to do this, you will have to be willing to learn first what the available treatments are.As you may be well aware of, there are already many treatments out there that offer you the best solutions to anxiety and depression. Chief of this would be medication.Medical science has made breakthroughs in discovering what bio-chemicals are at work in our brains and how we can influence their presence in the pursuit of making our lives better. This has led to the production of drugs that are available in the market today for the treatment of a wide variety of anxiety and depression symptoms. However, you must exercise caution in deciding what drug to use as it is also a fact that these drugs may work for some but not for others. Always consult your doctor and report to him immediately whenever you notice side effects or a worsening of your condition.Breakthroughs have also occurred in the field of psycho and behavioral therapy techniques. There is now a wide variety of techniques developed that therapists can choose from to fit their patient’s needs. One of these is the cognitive-behavioral technique called One Move technique. This technique teaches you how to fight back and gain control of your life by breaking the cycle of anxiety.Mention must also be made of homeopathic remedies that are being developed. These are effective alternative remedies to treat anxiety and depression that make use of special herbs that produce a calming effect to sufferers.Other alternative remedies you need to know of are acupuncture, massage, and meditation. There is also the cheap alternative of diet and exercise. By eating healthy and avoiding foods that trigger anxiety or depression, a sufferer can be able to conquer his condition. The more so if he exercises and gives his body a chance to produce mood-lifting chemicals in his brain. The different treatments mentioned here have worked for some people, but you must choose the one appropriate for you. Combining treatments is even suggested by some anxiety and depression experts as there really is no rule saying this can’t be done. In fact, it even seems like common sense as the treatments could actually be divided into two groups. The first group involves influencing chemicals in our body by the taking of medication (drugs/herbal preparations) or natural food. The second group involves therapy. For some people who want to treat anxiety and depression, healing can take place in positive ways when they combine any one or two from the first group with cognitive-behavior therapy like The Linden Method or Panic Away. Both do a great job of giving you the necessary tools to erase panic, anxiety, and depression from your life – Forever!

There are a number of treatments available to sufferers of depression who are looking for more help than using antidepressants alone in fighting depression. Treatments ranging from herbs and acupuncture to guided imagery are all finding their place in an ever modernising approach to treating depression. Although this field of medicine is vast, it is worth looking at treatments that are becoming increasingly popular with those looking to help them deal with their depression.

There are a number of herbal treatments available all claiming to relieve the symptoms of depression. Very few of them however do as most are unstudied or have had limited studies into their effectiveness.

Those herbs that are effective are just a few that have undergone multiple clinical trials whose outcome provides clinic proof backed by research. It is important to note that these herbs have proven to be effective only when taking the correct dosage of the herb and in a quality equal or greater to that used in the studies. There is conclusive proof that pharmaceutical-grade St John’s Wort is very effective in relieving the symptoms of depression. Studies have found that high quality St John’s Wort is just as effective as popular anti-depressive drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. It also causes less side-effects than the anti-depressive drugs. Studies have thus indicated that high quality St John’s Wort is the most effect herbal treatment available for depression.

Ginkgo Biloba is considered to be the oldest living tree species in existence. Ginkgo Biloba is affective in increasing blood flow throughout the body. This includes the brain where it helps increase memory function. Memory impairment is one of the symptoms of depression and very prevalent in a major depressive episode.

Meditation is the art of breathing. Maintaining a steady breath while sitting relaxes the body and mind. You cultivate mindfulness by concentrating on the present moment and what it brings to you. Some say it is about clearing the mind of clutter, but that is not the sole purpose of meditation. Daily practice will promote relaxation not just during sitting but throughout the day.

Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to various parts of the hands and feet such that it will stimulate the body to heal itself. These various points are said to represent various parts of the human body, and by applying pressure to them, they induce healing in that particular part of the body.

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture involves ‘puncturing’ the patients skin with very fine needles into carefully positioned points on the human body. Acupuncture stimulates the release of chemicals that alleviate the sensation of pain. It also corrects imbalances by stimulating the body functions to fight illnesses and conditions such as depression.

Massage is the art of using touch to promote relaxation concentrating on the link between mind and body. When the body is relaxed this is believed to promote relaxation and calmness in the mind. This will lead to lowering symptoms of depression. There are a number of massage therapies available such as shiatsu, Swedish and spinal release therapy.

Guided Imagery uses powerful mental image techniques to promote harmony between the mind and body. The patient is encouraged to see peaceful mental images that create calm within the mind of the patient. This is taught as a coping skill that can be used to fight unhealthy negative emotions such as anger, as well as helping relieving pain, stress and depression. It can also help relieve insomnia which is a symptom of depression and anxiety.

Physical exercise produces endorphins which cause a natural ‘high’ felt by the person. Exercise is known to relax the body and mind along with relieving stress and depression.

While everyone has experienced depression in one form or another, with clinical or other forms of major depression, sadness and other symptoms that present themselves are intense and last for longer than what is considered normal.

There are roughly 19 million American adults living with major depression. Because depression can become a serious medical illness, it requires professional care. Although depression can be mild, it is highly complex in nature, and one that should not be taken lightly. If one is feeling the symptoms of depression for longer than two weeks, speaking to a doctor or online doctor and/or setting up an online medical consultation and/or appointment is recommended.

There are several forms of depression, which include major depression, mild depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), and postpartum depression. While there are online doctor consultation services available for patients to discuss depression or symptoms of depression, seeing a certified doctor or psychiatrist in person is by far the best way to find the right solution for the specific condition. However, there are several online doctors who can offer insight into the causes and methods of temporary depression treatment that may be beneficial to one until he or she is able to consult with an offline medical professional.

The symptoms of depression vary – one may experience five or more of the following for at least a two-week period:

* Persistent sadness, pessimism* Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness* Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, including sex* Difficulty concentrating and complaints of poor memory* Worsening of co-existing chronic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes* Insomnia or oversleeping* Weight gain or loss* Fatigue, lack of energy* Anxiety, agitation, irritability* Thoughts of suicide or death* Slow speech; slow movements* Headache, stomachache, and digestive problemsQualified online doctors will inform that traditional forms of treatment for depression include antidepressant medication and/or psychotherapy. While these forms of treatment have proven effective, there are several successful alternative methods that treat depression as well. Some of these alternatives include:* Acupuncture – Acupuncture has been found to dramatically reduce the symptoms of depression, especially in those who have not found antidepressant medications too helpful.* Biofeedback – This is a technique used that encourages people to watch the signs that their own bodies give them, such as blood pressure, weight, etc. in order for the people to learn about what they can and cannot control about their bodies. This technique is known for its calming effects on the mind and body of the depressed individual.* Homeopathy – Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances – typically in pill form – that triggers the body’s natural system of healing. Trained homeopaths will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient. * Dietary monitoring – This is a proven way to reduce the effects and symptoms of depression by following the belief that “you are what you eat.” By changing diets and eating better, people, in turn, generally feel better and see a difference in their daily lives. A combination of a healthy diet and exercise has an incredible effect on depression.* Aromatherapy – This form of alternative medicine dates back thousands of years ago. Different scents are formulated to calm or soothe the depressed individual.* Natural vitamin supplements – these have been known to work in reducing the effects of depression by balancing out the body naturally.* Color therapy – Similar to aromatherapy, this form of therapy focuses on sight rather than smell, and has been proven to reduce stress and bring a sense of comfort to depressed people.Online doctors and other physicians are knowledgeable about the several ways to go about reducing the effects of depression, and suppressing the symptoms through simple changes at home. Watching diet and eating healthier, along with taking the proper vitamins can make a tremendous difference in attitude, drive, and happiness. With the combination of diet, exercise, and vitamins, aromatherapy and/or color therapy can account for an even bigger improvement in the lifestyle of the depressed individual. Additionally, the availability of online doctor consultations to discuss such conditions is also extremely beneficial.Acupuncture, homeopathy and aromatherapy typically require the expertise of a professional – but are nonetheless easily accessible in this day and age of modern medicine.

While the holidays are depicted in movies as a time of idyllic serenity and joy, we have all felt the realities of holiday stress. Financial concerns, gift giving, busy schedules, family obligations, weight gain and lack of exercise all play into the “holiday cheer”. These pressures can affect us physically, emotionally and spiritually often leading to anxiety and depression. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine provide a unique perspective and intervention for these common seasonal difficulties.

Anxiety comes in a wide range of manifestations, from mild worrying to more physical responses such as nausea, insomnia, shortness of breath and panic attacks. Some anxiety is a healthy response to the stress of daily life and new situations; however, anxiety that occurs randomly or excessively is a sign to take notice. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help balance both the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety and help to create harmony and spaciousness.

From an acupuncture and Chinese medicine perspective, many manifestations of anxiety can be traced back to the energetic concert between the heart and kidneys. The temperament of the heart is fiery, expansive and upward. From a Chinese medicine standpoint, it exhibits yang characteristics. The dynamic terrain of the kidneys are on the other end of the Chinese medicine continuum. The kidneys’ energetic character is fluid, inward and contemplative, exhibiting a yin nature. If there is too much fire, we may experience symptoms of anxiety and agitation of the mind.

It is estimated that 20% of the population is depressed at some point in life. Common symptoms of depression during holiday time include a sense of apathy, cynicism or anger toward the holiday season, isolation from festivities and holiday traditions, crying spells and over-consumption of food and/or alcohol. Depression may be compounded in some people by SAD, seasonal affective disorder – a type of depression associated with the low light conditions experienced during the winter months.

In acupuncture and Chinese medicine, the liver’s job is to negotiate the free flow of energy in the body. Impaired liver function can lead to inappropriate jams, limited availability of resources and sluggishness. In acupuncture and Chinese medicine this condition is often referred to as liver depression and qi stagnation. The “depression” is the body’s reduced ability to move its resources. Stagnation occurs when the lack of energy to circulate needed supplies becomes obstructed. This can cause sleep and digestive complaints, musculoskeletal pain and emotional instability. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine offer effective strategies to remedy the depressed energy and to move the resulting stagnation, leading to better health and outlook.

While modern life has helped make so many aspects of daily living easier, many people still suffer from emotional distress especially around the Holiday season. Subsequently, anxiety, increased stress and depression are some of the most common conditions affecting individuals during this eventful season. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are effective and safe tools to help smooth and balance what can be a challenging time of the year even under the best circumstances.

Article by Douglas M. Parks

Postpartum depression is a serious matter to consider. However, the question to as is, what can be done? If you are the one suffering from this emotional dilemma, do you just have to tough it out? It is comforting to know that postpartum depression has been found to be both temporary and treatable. While rest and family support may be all that is needed for mild symptoms, the key sign that medical attention is necessary is if the depression disrupts your ability to function, says the Office on Women’s Health.

Common treatments are antidepressant medication, talking with a mental-health expert, hormone treatment, or a combination of these, depending upon the severity of the case. Kangaroo, or skin-to-skin, care of the baby may also lessen maternal depression. There are also such alternative treatments as herbs, acupuncture, and homeopathic remedies.

However, there are some things that you can do personally to cope. These include eating a nutritious diet (including fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain cereals); avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and sugar; exercising in moderation; and taking a nap when your baby is asleep.

Family: Effective Source of Postpartum Depression Help?

Since a major factor in postpartum depression is lack of proper rest, other people can help by assuming some of the household chores and sharing in childcare. Studies show that far less postpartum depression occurs where the extended family rallies around to provide support and instruction. Many times a person can be of great assistance by just being a sympathetic listener, giving the new mother reassurance, and avoiding criticizing or judging.

Remember, PPD is a physical disorder and is not self-induced. As the organization Postpartum Education for Parents points out, a woman cannot ‘pull herself together’ any more than she could if she had the flu, diabetes, or heart disease. From the foregoing, it can be seen that although the postpartum period can be a wonderful time for new mothers, it can also be stressful.

Understanding it can help us to give the support new mothers need. Yes, along with the many treatments suggested today, the most important factor in any postpartum depression help procedures is the existence of family support. Undoubtedly, the family members, being a part of the postpartum depression help approach used on a mother is certainly one matter of importance.

As sources of genuine love and affection, the family members could be considered as the most important element in applying any kind of postpartum depression help procedure offered by professionals today. Yes, from the family comes the best postpartum depression support that any new mother needs to receive.

There are may retirees who move to the sunny state of Arizona. With the onset of the aging process, many older people are at risk of becoming depressed. Often they are isolated from their families and they may also be dealing with a number of health issues. Acupuncture may seem to be an unlikely treatment for depression and anxiety, but researchers have found that regular acupuncture treatments may alleviate anxiety and depression as well as use of some anti-depressant medications.

The main treatment objectives of acupuncture are the treatment of diseases, pain relief and the re-establishment of vibrant health. Many researchers are now leaning toward the theory that depression is physiological and not psychological. Depression and anxiety often occur when the body lacks the necessary nutrients and vitamins for the mind and body to function well. When these physiological needs are met, many people who are suffering from depression are relieved of their symptoms and have a dramatic increase in their sense of well-being.

Acupuncture has been found to help re-balance the body’s biochemistry, which, in turn, relieves anxiety and depression. It is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that uses the insertion of very fine needles into nerve points along the meridian lines of the body. The acupuncture needles stimulate nerve endings to send the right signals to their corresponding body parts. The result of this stimulation is the active production of bio-chemicals at exactly the right levels. With regular visits to an acupuncturist, it is possible for a patient to no longer need anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication.

Adjunct therapies to treating depression and anxiety range from having a healthy diet to getting enough exercise and adequate amounts of sleep. Sunshine, which is abundant in Arizona, is also very beneficial in boosting serotonin levels. This helps to re-balance brain chemistry and ease depressive symptoms. For retirees, it is also important to maintain their social connections and have a sense of purpose to their days. A good way to do this is for a retiree to volunteer a few hours or days a week in order to stay connected socially and experience a sense of accomplishment.

There are a number of schools that are accredited and offer training in acupuncture in Arizona. Before enrolling in an acupuncture school, it is important to make sure it is properly accredited. Studying acupuncture in Arizona will enable the practitioner to help many patients with a variety of ailments. Because of the high percentage of retirees in Arizona, treating anxiety and depression through natural means is a specialty in high demand.

www.ebookdotcom.com — Looking for YEAST INFEC? Yes, YEAST INFEC. It’s all here! How to Prevent Yeast Infections A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus normally found in the body. The organism Candida albicans is usually responsible for most infections. It can be caused by a variety of reasons including tight clothing, feminine products, pregnancy, diabetes, and the use of certain medications. Here are some strategies that can help you prevent yeast infections. 1.Dry vaginal area throughly after showering or swimming. A moist environment encourages the growth of yeast. 2.Avoid wearing tight clothing such as tight jeans, nylon panties, pantyhose, or clothing made of synthetic materials such as polyester. A tight, moist environment encourages the growth of yeast. 3.Wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with a cotton crotch. 4.Remove your wet bathing suit as soon as possible after swimming. 5.Wipe yourself after urinating or a bowel movement from front to back. This helps to avoid possible transfer of yeast from the rectum to the vagina. 6.Check diaper frequently for soiling. A moist environment encourages the growth of yeast. 7.Avoid douching. Douching disturbs normal vaginal pH balance which can lead to yeast infections. 8.Avoid use of feminine hygiene products such as feminine sprays and bubble baths. These products can be irritating to the vagina. 9.Avoid use of scented, deodorant or colored toilet paper, tampons, pads, or pantyliners. These products can …

There are many people who take anti-depressants for years and feel dependant on these drugs. But today, you can find alternative medicine for depression that have no side effects and are completely holistic. The drugs companies keep very quiet about it so as there sales are not affected.

Before looking at alternative medicine for depression, one’s body condition is taken into account. The intake of medicine varies from individual to individual. Drugs may have side effects such as rashes, tremors, dizziness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, urinary tract infections, disturbed dreams and excessive sweating. It is unlikely that one patient could suffer from all of these side effects while taking alternative herbal medicines.

As per the estimates, about 54% of patients seek alternative depression medications. Apart from yoga, acupuncture, diet and nutrition and exercise, the herbal remedies such as those that use hypericum extract have been just as effective as the standard anti-depressants and have minimal or no side effects. This was the conclusion of a study conducted by a well known research institute.

In looking for herbal remedy as the ideal alternative medicine for depression, you should make sure that the company is a reputable one and is certified with the authorities. It should have own manufacturing facilities and it also offers guarantees. Just because it says ‘natural’ on the bottle is no guarantee of the purity of the product and its ingredients. Check out their website for details and make sure that they have reputation in the market.

Taking alternative medicine for depression helps you come out of its grip without any compromise on health. Depression patients do not get addicted to these medicines and they can enjoy life as a normal person does. Today you can find a lot of information about alternative medications through online health portals. Just browse through these websites and achieve holistic health.

Judy was a 65-year old white female who began experiencing excruciating back pain during her 4th pregnancy. She consulted an orthopedic surgeon, tried a plethora of drugs, physical therapy, traction, and a shoe lift without any relief. After five years, she underwent a L4-5 laminectomy and fusion, and subsequently spent 3 months in a full body cast, then 6 months in a walking body cast. Her pain did not change, and the surgeon told her that it was only in her head. For the next 21 years she sought help from many specialists, numerous acupuncturists, chiropractors and other alternative therapies. She underwent another back surgery, spent one month at the Johns Hopkins Pain Clinic, was treated at the USC Medical Center, and tried new medications, all to no avail. The pain drove her to two suicidal attempts and she was seriously planning a third attempt when she learned about the NBE treatment. To her astonishment, the pain that had engulfed the right side of her body for 28 years was totally alleviated with the first treatment! Over the next 3 years she continued NBE treatments for her pain as well as chronic yeast infections, recurrent bronchitis, pneumonia, and depression, all as a result of her suffering and side effects of the drugs she took. These major ailments that she had lived with for decades was eventually eliminated. She moved out of state 18 years ago and told us on a phone call several years back that she has remained symptom free and sees a chiropractor …

Top Tips To Combat Postpartum Depression and Fast

My Grandma Mary gave me tons of advice before my baby came, but she never said a word about depression. When my depression came on, I never knew what hit me. My colicky baby, poopy diapers, sleep deprivation, nasty hemorrhoids, sixty extra pounds, confused hormones and a new limp from pulled ligaments made me look and feel like hell.

The word depression does not begin to describe my “baby blues” and it really screwed with my marriage too. I got no warning. I came home from the hospital and just wished I could go back and let them take care of the baby. I started sinking fast. A month after my sweet baby arrived I’d find myself staring in to space with no desire to do anything. I became listless toward my husband and only had enough energy to feed the baby. I barely showered or spoke. These are typical symptoms, I guess.

In the book, “This Isn’t What I Expected: Overcoming Postpartum Depression” by Karen Kleiman, the author describes the signs of postpartum depression. I had them all – which is scary in retrospect. I actually had what’s called postpartum psychosis. I was medically messed up. I hope this information can help other Moms so no one has to suffer the way I did.

I never knew that 30% of all women are affected by postpartum depression. That’s 400,000 a year in our country alone. It usually hits six to eight weeks after the baby arrives, when we are supposed to be filled with baby bliss. Mother Nature can be tricky!

Here’s the checklist of depression symptoms that affect new Moms. I had all of these. Ughhhhh!

Can’t shake the depression.
Cry daily.
Sad mostly.
Can’t concentrate.
Don’t enjoy what you used to enjoy.
No interest in lovemaking.
Can’t sleep, even when the baby does.
Feel like a total failure.
Always tired.
Not enjoying food.
Not laughing.
Feel hopeless.
Not feeling like oneself.
Feeling crazy.
Low self esteem.
Delusional.
Thoughts of harming the baby.
Mood swings.
Anxiety.

The fact that I felt all these “signs” clarifies a lot for me. I was clinically depressed while thinking this should be the happiest time of my life, which only further confused me. Eventually I did get help and I got better, but here are the best tips my research found this week and I found different recommendations for all three types of postpartum depression.

BABY BLUES

Signs: mild mood swings, anxiety, sadness, irritability, crying, decreased concentration, trouble sleeping.

Suggestions: Rest, get help from family and friends, connect with new Moms, avoid alcohol.

OFFICIAL POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Signs: loss of appetite, insomnia, intense irritability, anger, overwhelming fatigue, no sexual desires, severe mood swings, difficulty bonding with the baby, withdrawing from family and friends, thoughts of harming the baby or yourself.

Suggestions: Counseling, marital therapy, antidepressants, hormone therapy.

POSTPARTUM PSYCHOSIS:

Signs: confusion, disorientation, hallucinations, disorientations, paranoia, attempts to harm yourself or the baby.

Suggestions: Anti-depressants, anti-psychotic drugs, mood stabilizers, electroconvulsive therapy, team of health providers get involved.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT SUGGESTIONS: (for all of the above)

Acupuncture, Omega -3 Fatty Acids, Massage Therapy, Creative Arts, Music therapy, Herbal therapy (not if nursing), Ginko, time away.

I’m glad I got help. I don’t think my family would be intact today had I not reached out. If you or someone you know recently had a baby, share this with them, I wish someone warned me that this could happen. Hit me like a Mack truck and I am still scarred by those months. I don’t want that to happen to anyone else.
