About five years ago, I developed severe neck pain and headaches that has been with me 24/7 since that time. This occurred around the same time my anxiety disorder and depression worsened. What originally began as severe neck pain spread all across my head. For awhile, it was extremely painful to make any kind of facial expression, but wearing a dental mouthguard while asleep in addition to some types of physical therapy helped. However, my neck pain and headaches are still there. No type of medication I&#8217;ve tried from stuff specifically meant for headaches to muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety medications have helped. I&#8217;ve also tried massage therapy, chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncture, rolfing, psychotherapy, and hypnosis, but none of those helped.</p>
<p>I no I probably can&#8217;t get rid of my depression, anxiety disorder, insomnia, and neck pain/headaches all at once, but I&#8217;d at least like to tackle one of them. My neck pain and headache makes it very difficult to think, do any type of physical activity, and causes extreme discomfort when sitting or standing. It&#8217;s also affected my memory and ability to learn. I used to have a great memory, which was very important since I previously did a lot of reading, but now I forget what I read almost immediately. Not only that, but my brain can&#8217;t seem to grasp metaphors, analogies, and definitions very well. Whenever I try learning new vocabulary, it never sticks. It&#8217;s infuriating, because now my mind is so muddled and I&#8217;m worried that it&#8217;ll keep me from eventually going to grad school and pursuing the type of career I want.</p>

<p><i>Answer by Kathy Miller</i><br />You can get the CD&#8217;s of the book  A New Earth, by Edkhart Tolle, what he says to do has helped me get rid of pain in an instant.  Also, Jonathan Parker has excellent meditation tapes at Quantum Quests for all kinds of problems, they are not cheap, but are well worth every penny you pay for them.  Eat good healthy foods and get yourself a juicer, and juice carrot, with some celery and a beet, and drink it often, you can put apples with it also.  Cut out all junk food, eat only natural healthy food, and eat a high protein breakfast. Unity church has a prayer line, you can call and ask them to pray for you, they are great, and many will pray for your healing.</p>

I also experience popping/clicking in my neck area and the doc. says its because my neck is stiff and tight and when i hear the popping its a way to release the pressure.  What I experience is not a pain but more of a pressure. They recommend lots of exercise as a way to release stress &#8212; any other suggestions?!?!<br />
I also go for massage therapy, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments on a regular basis, which seems to help a bit</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just finished a brutal year of internship (I work in mental health), I moved, and I am finishing my dissertation in the next few weeks.</p>
<p>I have always had a bit of runner&#8217;s knee, for which I&#8217;ve had acupuncture, PT, and chiropractic. During my internship year, I started to have severe knee pain and some other assorted pains: a bit of inflammation in my wrist, more frequent stiff necks. </p>
<p>I am going through the typical channels now, getting PT for my knee. I have been using Traumeel for pain, and it worked initially but is now less effective. I also quit sugar, alcohol, and wheat for a month, which didn&#8217;t make much difference. I am currently taking fish oil and a multi. My stress level is wayyy lower now, but my body is still telling me it needs attention. Rest makes the knee a bit better, but I wish I could exercise because I put on some weight this year too.</p>

<p>I feel like the year really did a number on me and I want to do what it takes to get better. So, my questions: Anyone ever have these types of experiences? Any thoughts on supplements or alternative treatments, especially in the Boston area? </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At first glance, you would think that the term &#8220;chronic fatigue&#8221; says it all. In medicine, any disease, disorder or illness that has the word &#8220;chronic&#8221; attached to it means that they persist for more than 6 months, either recurring or not. However, chronic fatigue means more than that.</p>
<p>While it seems pretty straightforward, there is actually so much more to this disorder (or disorders) than what its name suggests. It could mean anywhere from persistent headaches, flu-like symptoms or fatigue that goes on for weeks and months. Some even have to suffer for over a few years. Some never really fully recovered.</p>
<p><span id="more-787"></span></p>
<p>Patients normally have to suffer from flu-like sickness that does not subside from medications or rest. Also, there is some degree of debilitating exhaustion that limits one from functioning well. Many patients describe this exhaustion as being worn out even before getting up in the morning. In fact, chronic fatigue is not resolved simply by taking a nap or a longer sleep.</p>
<p>The reverse is often true- the lesser activities a patient performs, the higher are the chances that the illness will get worse. With chronic fatigue, a person is also constantly plagued with foggy thoughts and unstable concentration. As if to make it much worse, the person also simultaneously feels joint and muscle pains, disturbed sleep, sore throat, and general sense of absurd health.</p>
<p>But that is not the end of it. For some, these symptoms develop psychological stress that in turn develops anxiety, depression and irritability. These conditions pose great risks of becoming full-blown disorders if appropriate interventions are not administered.</p>
<p>The sad fact is, people who are affected with chronic fatigue syndrome used to be very healthy, very active individuals. They used to lead very normal lives that were free from any of the aforementioned symptoms. This makes one wonder how a perfectly healthy person – in fact one who probably had led a very active, if not exceptionally energetic life – turn into someone who is perpetually sick? Good question, but one that is difficult to answer.</p>
<p>There are actually no clear answers as to why chronic fatigue syndrome develops in one person and not to another. Current studies and clinical evidence however suggests that chronic fatigue syndrome can develop after contracting a serious infection or after experiencing extreme levels of stress. Having said that, there are numerous medical cases that purport to these theories, so to speak.</p>
<p>There are, for example, valid estimates where 96% of people who develop chronic fatigue used to actively exercise prior to the onset of the disease. Majority of the patients were also at the prime of their lives when they developed the disease. It is not surprising therefore that this disorder is coined as the &#8220;yuppie disease&#8221;, because it occurs at the time when a person is supposedly healthy and full of life.</p>
<p>After the onset of the disease, the lives of these people are changed drastically. They get stuck in their beds and quit their jobs because it is very taxing to get up. They had to abandon their roles and obligations because they do not have even enough energy to take care of themselves. In fact, they had to live a very sedentary and weak life because they are exhausted all the time.</p>
<p>Indeed, life for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferers is hard, oftentimes debilitating.</p>

Here are the most common treatment modalities to which CFS patients are subjected and to which most of them respond well.</p>
<p>Self-Care/Management Techniques</p>

<p>Some patients can facilitate self-care treatments. This can be done by monitoring the level and pacing of activities such that prolonged and extreme levels of exhaustion are prevented. This can also be done by preventing the urge to rest. Since CFS is not relieved through rest, regardless of the duration, health care professionals do not advise the patients to rest excessively. Some form of physical activity must be maintained. This is oftentimes recommended by the physician. When trying to manage the symptoms of the disorder by yourself, it is best to keep the pacing and the level of the activities under control. Otherwise, symptoms may occur at a more debilitating rate.</p>
<p>Cognitive Behavioral Therapy</p>
<p>CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a psychological therapy that delivers relief of symptoms but not necessarily cure. <p>Autonomic nervous system stimulants are used to help improve concentration and short-term memory which are greatly affected by the disorder.</p>

Depression and irritability lead to fatigue and bone weariness.  You are so sleepy all the time but you can&#8217;t get a good night&#8217;s sleep. You want to stop the pain and you want to get to sleep. All this trouble tends to lead to alcoholism, drug abuse, getting surgeries which are unnecessary, and family misery. </p>
<p>Your appetite may be gone or you may eat yourself silly with the pain and depression. It&#8217;s almost impossible for you to have any kind of social life because you have to be medicated to do much of anything.  As a result, you are no longer a part of your former world. You are less active and perhaps you start to gain weight.  You can&#8217;t exercise like you used to because it hurts too much. You can let your hair hang down and spill your guts. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a chance to meet new friends. They will listen and also get you to laugh some about what all you have been through. And you will have a network of people who can give you new information and share with you what didn&#8217;t work for them. Even if you are a shy person, I would encourage you to at least try one of these groups. They are in your community and on the internet. If you are too depressed to be around anyone, you are not getting the right medication.   The group would be able to tell you that right away and give you encouragement. </p>
<p>With chronic pain and depression, you will need treatment based on how severe this deadly combination is for you. You will most likely get pain medication and antidepressants.  The main thing for you to know is that if you have bad side effects, demand that your medication be changed. Insurance companies will pay for your medications in most cases.  Often they will also pay for counseling as to how to handle your chronic illness such as diabetes. Don&#8217;t expect them to pay for much talk therapy. </p>
<p>Some people swear by chiropractic adjustments for spinal pain. Others say that acupuncture has helped them. The main thing for you to understand is that chronic pain can&#8217;t be cured most of the time. I about fell over when my doctor told me to forget finding a cure, that there was none.  But you can get some relief from your pain and you definitely can get relief from your depression with the right medication.  Do not give up. Insist that you get the best help there is to get.  You deserve it.</p>

There are two kinds of headaches. The first is called the tension headache, which may happen for a few minutes to a few hours. It usually goes away by drinking some water or taking a break from whatever the person is doing. Those who are experiencing this for more than 15 days in a given month has something worse which is the second kind called a chronic headache. Research shows that there are very few people that have this problem. This often occurs to women than men perhaps because of hormones and other chemicals in the body.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Scientists do not yet know the real cause of a chronic headache. Some attribute it to stress or not getting enough nutrients in the diet. Believe it not, the type of medicine being taken may also be the cause of this problem. Should this occur for more than two days, it is best to consult with a doctor immediately for proper treatment. Doctors will not be able to tell that the patient has a chronic headache. This can only be done after answering some questions such as how long the headaches have happened including one&#8217;s medical history. </p>

To narrow down the problem, a blood test and a neurological exam will be done on the patient. Two of these tests are the CT scan and the electroencephalogram or EEG. <p>Chronic fatigue syndrome, sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis, is a complicated disorder characterized by debilitating fatigue that does not improve with bed rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. Often there are additional nonspecific symptoms such as; a sore throat, headache, tender muscles, joint pain, difficulty thinking and loss of short-term memory. </p>
<p>Chronic fatigue syndrome is hard to diagnose because a single diagnostic test does not exist and there is no identifiable cause of the illness. The syndrome is therefore undiagnosed in an estimated 80 percent of people living with the illness. Chronic fatigue syndrome is more common in females than males and affects all racial and ethnic groups, particularly those in the 30 to 45 age group.</p>
<p><span id="more-386"></span></p>
<p>Because the medical profession, let alone the general public does not understand the disease or often does not even believe it exists, many patients report that a chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosis carries a considerable social stigma, and has frequently been viewed as malingering, hypochondriasis, phobia, wanting attention, or yuppie flu.</p>
<p>Causes and Incidence</p>
<p>The cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is unknown but there are many postulations that it may occur after viral infections, bronchitis, mononucleosis, hepatitis, glandular fever or intestinal illness. Recent studies have shown that inflammation of nervous system pathways, acting as an immune response, may play a role as well.</p>
<p>One trial suggested that exposure to childhood trauma was associated with a six fold increase in the risk of having chronic fatigue syndrome. Sexual abuse, emotional abuse and emotional neglect have also been associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.</p>
<p>A number of conditions overlap or coexist with chronic fatigue syndrome and have similar symptoms. In fact, many experts believe fibromyalgia is simply another variant of chronic fatigue syndrome or different manifestations of the same disease.</p>
<p>Signs and Symptoms</p>
<p>The characteristic symptom is prolonged, often overwhelming fatigue which is commonly associated with a varying complex of other symptoms that are similar to those of many infections. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can last for many years.</p>
<p>The following description of the plight of one woman in her own words is typical:</p>
<p>Coming back from a tiring and long overseas business trip with what I thought was a bad cold, I began to feel very tired, had headaches, muscle pains and joint pains. Initially I just thought I had picked up a bad case of flu, but over time the tiredness got worse. I visited my doctor and there started a procession of diagnoses which included; thyroid problems, depression, pre menopause. None of the treatments and drugs prescribed helped, instead things got considerably worse.</p>
<p>I was trying to hold down a responsible position as national sales manager for a major pharmaceutical company and having to come home twice a day to get a half hours sleep, then eventually getting home so tired I found myself climbing up the stairs on my hands and knees. Finally when I had to get a chair to sit on while showering I called my company and resigned. The human resources manager suggested that instead I take medical leave and referred me to a specialist. This time the diagnosis was sleep apnea. In I went for tests at a sleep clinic and again wrong diagnosis.</p>
<p>By this time despairing as otherwise healthy 48 year old would be, at last I came across a doctor who said she had suffered from the same symptoms and it had turned out to be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With her support, sleeping as much as 16 hours a day and 2 years off work I recovered to the point where I could take on part time work again and eventually full time work in a less stressful position.</p>
<p>Even now some 7 years later I still need to sleep as much as 12 hours a day. Over the years I have met many others who suffered from CFS, including one young and very fit professional athlete. This is a serious condition which is far more common than anyone realizes.</p>
<p>Diagnosis</p>
<p>Because the cause and nature of Chronic fatigue syndrome are still unknown, no single test unequivocally confirms its presence. Therefore diagnosis is based on patient history and should include, severe chronic fatigue of six months or longer duration with other known medical conditions excluded by clinical diagnosis. Concurrently a patient must have four or more of the following symptoms: substantial impairment in short term memory or concentration, a sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multiple joint pain without swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern or severity, unrefreshing sleep, and post exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours. </p>
<p>Treatment</p>
<p>No treatment is known to instantly cure CFS. Symptomatic treatment may include a combination of several modalities. Medication to treat depression, anxiety, pain, discomfort and fever are commonly used. Hidden yeast infections may be present and need to treated. Anti viral drugs can be tried. Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome can be useful in helping patients to live with their condition.</p>
<p>Many patients prefer the natural approach to the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome, this involves a long and gentle process to help rebuild the immune system and help the body to detoxify itself and is likely to involve; complementary or alternative treatments, such as massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, yoga, stretching, or self hypnosis. Some research has found that natural D ribose supplements may significantly improve the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, with particular benefit in study participants energy level and overall wellbeing.</p>
<p>Several studies in China have indicated acupuncture may help treat chronic fatigue syndrome. A development from this is the recent advent of acupressure patches which are reported to have been used with considerable success in reducing symptoms substantially.</p>

There are many ways to describe a headache and recent research has shown headaches to be more than just a mere annoyance. Headaches are, well, a major headache for the United States where 157 million workdays – accounting for almost $13 billion!! – are lost each year due to missed work caused by headaches. Fortunately, recent research has also shown that regular <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.corporateofficechairmassage.com/massage-therapy/">massage therapy</a> can help ease the intensity, duration, and number of tension-type headaches, a pain that 78 percent of American will experience in their lifetime.</p>
<p>The effectiveness of <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.corporateofficechairmassage.com/full-body-massage/">massage</a> for preventing and lessening the pain caused by headaches is another reason why people should use massage to improve their health and quality of life. But this research could turn out to be a Godsend for those who don’t just suffer from infrequent headaches, but, instead, chronic tension-type headaches.</p>
<p><span id="more-351"></span></p>
<p>There are three types of tension-type headaches: episodic, a stress-induced headache that can be treated with over-the-counter medicines and usually only occurs once a month, or less; frequent, which occurs 2 – 15 times a month and is usually associated with symptoms of migraine and can’t be effectively alleviated through medication; and chronic, where headaches occur more than 15 times a month and can even be daily or continuous over many days. Researchers showed that massage was very helpful in alleviating the seemingly endless pain of those suffering from this last type, chronic tension-type headache.</p>
<p>While the exact cause of these chronic, tension-type headaches has not been scientifically proven, researchers believe that chemical imbalances and muscles tightening in the scalp and neck are primary causes. Massage already has been proven to boost the immune system, relieve stress, and loosen muscles, so it seems evident that massage would be able to relieve these symptoms and thus reduce chronic headaches.</p>
<p>However, it wasn’t until 2002, in an article published in the American Journal of Public Health, that researchers actually conducted a scientific study on the effects of <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.corporateofficechairmassage.com/">Massage</a> on chronic tension-type headaches. Those suffering from the condition were first monitored for a four-week period to gauge the duration, strength, and frequency of their headaches. They were then treated with two, thirty-minute massages each week over the following four weeks. The massages focused on specific areas of the neck and head, and their headache symptoms were monitored during this period. The results were staggering.</p>
<p>Patients who were experiencing headaches 5, 6, 7 times a week began to see the frequency of their headaches decrease to 2 and 3 times a week. The duration of the patients’ headaches, which had averaged 8 hours before massages were administered, fell to 4 hours.  And while one patient experienced an increase in headache intensity in the period after massages were given, the other participants in the study saw the intensity of their headaches decrease, some nearly 50 percent.</p>
<p>The researchers noted that more study is needed in order to increase the amount of participants and strength of the results, as well as determine what effect stretching and relaxation techniques also used during the study had on the improved conditions of the chronic headache sufferers.</p>
<p>However, the results of the study were dramatic, especially given the serious conditions that chronic tension-type headache sufferers can develop if their pain goes unrelieved. These conditions include: insomnia, depression, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, and other emotional problems. Sufferers of chronic, tension-type headaches can also become addicted to painkillers and antidepressants. If the research from this study holds true, massage would offer them a drug-free alternative to deal with their pain.  </p>
<p>President Barack Obama recently noted that acupuncture has been shown to alleviate chronic headaches and could be used as an alternative to more invasive, and costly, surgery/medication. He said he would let science guide him when it came to deciding what forms of therapy to include in a national healthcare plan. If alternative forms, such as acupuncture and massage, showed scientific, therapeutic results, he would pursue them. Currently millions of Americans miss work and lose money due to chronic tension-type headaches; perhaps pursuing massage would get them the therapeutic result they are no doubt looking for. </p>

Overall, chronic pain will affect between 15% and 33% of the U.S. population every year, and cost the nation $70 billion in medical charges, lost working days, and workers&#8217; compensation &#8212; more than cancer and heart disease combined. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Chronic pain can be induced by a variety of situations, including work-related injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, neurological disorders, joint disease, migraines, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Most chronic pain is located in the back, hip, and/or shoulders. Particularly with the proper health insurance coverage, however, these conditions can be effectively treated and, if not cured, at least managed. Texas is filled with clinics and doctors specializing in pain management &#8212; from Austin, to Dallas, to Houston. </p>
<p><span id="more-303"></span></p>
<p>&#13;<br />
While acute pain can be beneficial &#8212; warning, or forcing, us to stop an activity before we injurey ourselves further &#8212; it is quite different from chronic pain. Acute pain occurs on a temporary basis, such as when spraining an ankle, or even when breaking a bone. Pain is considered chronic when it has occurred either continually, or intermittently, over a period longer than six months. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
One of the major frustrations with chronic pain is that so many in Texas, and across the United States, do not respond to treatment. Because many of the cases are work-related injuries, valuable workers in cities like Houston, Dallas, and  Austin are being lost. Even the strongest medications don&#8217;t always work, and physicians are still not sure why. According to Dr. Zena Quezado, chief of the Department of Anesthesia and Surgical Services at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, it could be due to genetic makeup. Different enzymes metabolize these medications, and not everyone has the same enzymes, nor do they work in the same way. Varying levels of pain are also reported after the exact same procedure or injury.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Such conditions of chronic, seemingly untreatable pain can lead to anxiety, fear, depression, lack of activity, and unemployment. Its management, then, is arguably one of the most pressing health issues today throughout Texas and the rest of the United States. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
While treating the various aspects of pain, including the psychological aspects, are critical, the following will focus on the major holistic forms of physical (versus psychological) treatment for chronic pain. Many health insurance policies will even cover certain treatments with the right referrals. Much of the information has been adapted from Prescriptions for Natural Healing by James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A Balch, C.N.C. As always, consult a qualified health practitioner before undergoing any treatment.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
(1) Acupuncture</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Most acupuncture treatments performed in the United States are on victims of chronic pain, many of them back pain sufferers. An ancient Chinese practice, acupuncture is based on the belief that energy (or chi) flows through the body along certain pathways called meridians. When the flow of that energy is disturbed, unbalanced, or otherwise obstructed, pain can result. The focus of acupuncture treatments for pain, then, is to return the normal flow of energy, thereby reducing, or eliminating pain. This treatment has no known side effects, is found to be quite relaxing for most patients, and is often accompanied by herbs based on formulas thousands of years old.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Most Westerners are not accustomed to believing in a medicine that bases its principles on the flow of unseen energy, but, whatever one&#8217;s personal beliefs, acupuncture seems to work. Even the National Institutes of Health reported acupuncture as &#8220;beneficial&#8221; for chronic and acute pain. Further studies have indicated its effectiveness for carpal tunnel syndrome, and that it may increase immune response, as well as stimulate the production of endorphins, a natural pain killer produced by the body. In China, certain surgeries are performed with acupuncture as their primary form of anesthesia. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
(2) Chiropractic Care</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Spinal manipulation is considered a &#8220;proven treatment&#8221; for lower back pain by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Though chiropractic care is effective for many conditions, treating disorders of the back and spine are, by far, the most common reason for seeking out such a practitioner. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Chiropractors focus on the spinal cord itself, believing that, if the spinal cord is able to relay unadulterated signals to the brain and other organs, then healthy function can be maintained throughout the body. Through careful adjustment of misplaced vertebrae, the spinal cord can regain its usual impulse signaling. This enables the body to restore normal nerve function &#8212; thereby reducing or eliminating pain, and heal itself of other ailments. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
(3) Massage therapy</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Massage is a specific type of body work, and focuses on the manipulation of muscles and soft body tissues. It works through the promotion of muscle relaxation, by increasing circulation in the lymphatic system (thus reducing inflammation), breaking up scar tissue and adhesions, promoting blood flow and, in the case of sinus problems or certain migraines, by promoting drainage of the sinuses. For back pain sufferers, massage therapy may be instrumental in managing pain without, or with fewer, medications. Strong anecdotal evidence, obtained from thousands of practitioners&#8217; experiences, suggests that massage therapy may also help to realign tissues, tendons, and vertebrae. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Deep tissue massage is designed to release chronic muscular tension, and is generally applied with a fair amount of pressure on the affected area. There are numerous forms of massage, however, and, with so many choices, it may be best to do some research first. Look up a reputable natural health site online, or visit your local library.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
(4) Herbs<br />&#13;<br />
Herbs are often classified in a separate category from Western medicines, and for good reason. Herbs are plant-based remedies, with no artificial or laboratory ingredients. But herbs and Western medications operate on the same principle: that, through the ingestion or application of certain substances, a desired effect may be achieved. Some herbs are very strong, or should not be taken with certain conditions, such as high blood pressure or allergies. Certain herbs, though with promising research results, are also controversial, such as marijuana. Though believed by many in the medical community to be highly effective in managing pain, it is still illegal in most states. Therefore, treat herbs as medications and never use them without consulting a knowledgeable health practitioner first. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
	For muscle spasms and cramps, angelica, black haw, cramp bark, kava kava, rosemary and valerian root are excellent choices. Hops, kava kava, passion flower, valerian root, wild lettuce, and wood betony also have muscle relaxing properties.<br />&#13;<br />
	Relieve tension and nerve pain with blue violet, catnip, chamomile, gotu kola, licorice, rosemary, white willow, or wood betony teas. Use chamomile and licorice on a short-term basis only.<br />&#13;<br />
	Capsaicin, a primary ingredient in capsicum (or cayenne pepper) can relieve pain through limiting the production of the vaguely named neural pain transmitter &#8220;substance P.&#8221; Capsaicin can be taken orally, or used topically when mixed with a carrier oil or cream. Studies with capsaicin have been used to treat pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and cluster headaches.<br />&#13;<br />
	Essential oils of jasmine, juniper, lavender, peppermint, rose, rosemary, and thyme can be used to relieve pain. Never ingest essential oils, and always apply topically with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Chronic pain, though at times beyond frustrating, can be a manageable condition. With proper treatment, sound research, and good decision making, even most of the worst cases can at least be improved. If you suffer from chronic pain, be persistent about pursuing different types of treatment until you find one that helps. After all, you are the one experiencing the pain, and must therefore make the best decision regarding it.</p>

People with chronic fatigue syndrome are trapped in a downward spiral. They suffer from extreme exhaustion and muscle pains, thus the need to have as much rest as possible. However, having too much rest leads to a sedentary lifestyle which has several detrimental effects to the body. Decreased physical activity leads to muscle wasting and loss of bone mass. But regular exercise can help stop that downward trend and replace it with more positive cycle.</p>
<p>Exercise has a number of benefits. Starting a regular exercise routine leads to increased performance and strengthened muscles. This, in turn results to a more optimistic outlook. Research has also revealed that exercise helps combat anxiety and depression. This may be the result of a combination of the release of endorphins (the body&#8217;s natural pain killers) and the sense of fulfillment at being able to improve the body&#8217;s functions. Exercise also helps strengthen the cardiovascular system.</p>
<p><span id="more-202"></span></p>
<p>Individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome should first consult their doctor to determine if they are fit and ready to perform strenuous physical activities such as exercise.  To embark on an exercise program without ascertaining if the patient is ready for it can be very dangerous. A patient should first get the approval of his/her doctor before attempting any form of strenuous exercise.</p>
<p>They can then start with gentle exercise routines that will be slowly and gradually increased in intensity and frequency. A physical therapist can also be hired to develop an exercise program that is custom-fit for the patient and his particular condition.</p>
<p>Some good exercise routines for people with chronic fatigue syndrome include swimming, walking, aerobic exercises, rowing machine, and riding a stationary bike. The patient can progress from five minutes to a full hour or more of exercise per day within a few months.</p>
<p>The patient must exercise caution at all times to prevent overexertion, which can lead to worsening of the symptoms of chronic fatigue. Overdoing exercise when the patient isn&#8217;t feeling well can lead to an overall performance decline. If the patient overexerts himself, this will inevitably result to several days of muscle pain, which necessitates rest. When this happens, the patient might relapse into that downward trend of non-activity and sedentary lifestyle.</p>
<p>Recent studies have revealed that people with chronic fatigue syndrome have a rather distorted perception of muscular activity.  They might not be able to determine how much exercise they have already done or when it is time to stop and rest.</p>
<p>If the goal of exercise is to regain muscle strength, it is very important to get the advice and approval of a doctor or specialist before starting on an exercise program.</p>
