Question by Trae: Does anyone have any idea what I can do?
I’m incredibly frustrated. I’ve had social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depression, insomnia, and chronic headaches for several years now, and they won’t go away regardless if I take medical drugs, see psychologists, or try various types of alternative medicine (chiropractic, neurologists, naturopath, acupuncture, etc.). I’m 26 now and I’ve at least had the anxiety since I was a teenager, and it continually got worse over the years. Eventually, I was not only deathly afraid around people, but also in private. When I was 17 and going through a lot of turmoil, I developed a sharp stomach pain that lasted 24/7 for 5 years until I went to a specialist who discovered that it was hemrroids and burned them off, which worked… but then I got a severe headache and neck pain a few months later that has now lasted from ’06 to 11 24/7. The anxiety and depression meanwhile have gotten worse and worse. I was suicidal off and on for a few years, but I somehow managed to throw off the idea of wanting to die, but my anxiety and feeling of hopelessness is as bad as it ever was.

I currently live at home, but I have no one I can turn to. I was fortunate to always have food, shelter, and education, but my family was also abusive and didn’t ever allow me to voice opinions contrary to their own. My dad is a chiropractor, and he’s strongly against medicine, immunization, etc. and thinks that the body can heal itself. When I broke my arm snowboarding when I was 13, he didn’t allow me to get a cast and claimed it’d heal itself. After not using it for a month, it did become functional again, but there was still a pain and weakness that’s lasted until this day and it won’t go away or get stronger no matter how much I exercise.

Anyway, I never knew what I was dealing with when I was younger, because I was always just told I was shy and therefore inferior. I never realized that my breathing troubles, extremely dry and sore throat, racing heart, and feeling that I can’t move, higher voice pitch, etc was a result of anxiety. I was always told that conditions such as anxiety, depression, and OCD where made up by pharma companies and doctors so they could get rich.

I’m always blamed for my problems no matter what I try. I most recently tried a device called AlphaStim for 3 weeks (which is how long you’re supposed to try it), and it hasn’t worked. My dad claimed that it has, and that I haven’t given things a chance. He gets extremely angry whenever I question what he tells me.

No one else in my family understands either because my parents are always very stressed and angry, yet they only focus on wealth. I don’t think they over got over my brother’s death from leukemia and they focus so much on how they appear to their relatives, church, etc. and accumulating things that they don’t pay attention to their family and what’s happening with the economy.

I have no one around that I can turn to and I’m really not sure what to do. I want to get out of this. I want to be able to work again even if it’s a minimum wage job like I did during college.

Answer by Lila
The best source of help that you can get is from nami.org which is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. On their site you can find the phone number for your local chapter. They are there for support, information and they have the best resources for the help that you need in your area.

Question by Jamal: Does anyone know of a way to cure chronic headaches and neck pain?
About five years ago, I developed severe neck pain and headaches that has been with me 24/7 since that time. This occurred around the same time my anxiety disorder and depression worsened. What originally began as severe neck pain spread all across my head. For awhile, it was extremely painful to make any kind of facial expression, but wearing a dental mouthguard while asleep in addition to some types of physical therapy helped. However, my neck pain and headaches are still there. No type of medication I’ve tried from stuff specifically meant for headaches to muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety medications have helped. I’ve also tried massage therapy, chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncture, rolfing, psychotherapy, and hypnosis, but none of those helped.

I no I probably can’t get rid of my depression, anxiety disorder, insomnia, and neck pain/headaches all at once, but I’d at least like to tackle one of them. My neck pain and headache makes it very difficult to think, do any type of physical activity, and causes extreme discomfort when sitting or standing. It’s also affected my memory and ability to learn. I used to have a great memory, which was very important since I previously did a lot of reading, but now I forget what I read almost immediately. Not only that, but my brain can’t seem to grasp metaphors, analogies, and definitions very well. Whenever I try learning new vocabulary, it never sticks. It’s infuriating, because now my mind is so muddled and I’m worried that it’ll keep me from eventually going to grad school and pursuing the type of career I want.

I’m not sure what to do, so I’d greatly appreciate any help you could provide. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Kathy Miller
You can get the CD’s of the book A New Earth, by Edkhart Tolle, what he says to do has helped me get rid of pain in an instant. Also, Jonathan Parker has excellent meditation tapes at Quantum Quests for all kinds of problems, they are not cheap, but are well worth every penny you pay for them. Eat good healthy foods and get yourself a juicer, and juice carrot, with some celery and a beet, and drink it often, you can put apples with it also. Cut out all junk food, eat only natural healthy food, and eat a high protein breakfast. Unity church has a prayer line, you can call and ask them to pray for you, they are great, and many will pray for your healing.

Answer by ITISWHATITIS!
It might, I am currently using this type of therapy for pain and sleeping issues also. It something that wiill take couple of sessions , this what they told me. You should speak with an accupuncturist, see that they say. Sometimes they prescribe herbs to go with your treatment too.

I had my very first panic attack last night. I have been a hypochondriac my whole life so the stress of that is probably what caused it and also family history because my mom and sister suffer them. At first I had no idea what was going on. My cheeks and jaw felt swollen, I got really tired and I had that feeling I can only describe as feeling like you’re not here. Like the world exists, but you’re not in it. Kind of disconnected. I thought this was because I didn’t get much sleep last night. I was scared though so I was thinking it might be aneurysm because I had a headache earlier, but not while this was happening. I decided to take a shower to see if it would help, but when I was in the shower I started having a hard time breathing. I got out of the shower and could not catch my breath and out of nowhere I got nauseous. I had not idea what was going on so I started hyperventilating and went to grab a paper bag. I was using that, but still I could not catch my breath. I felt like I was dying. Because my mom suffers from panic attacks she gave me a Xanax and within 45 minutes everything was better. This was one of the scariest things in my life. I really did feel like dying. This was my first panic attack ever, but I don’t want it again and I don’t like taking drugs, so does anyone know if Acupuncture has worked for their panic attacks?

i see a natural path doctor for a few issues i have.. some anxiety and depression.
my doctor has given me the option of having acupuncture done.
he told me about it a little bit, showed me some of the needles he will use. he told me that it will probably help me to feel better in some areas, but im very nervous.
i am quite afraid of needles, no matter the size.
i also have a HUGE imagination, and i don’t like the though of needles going into my skin. it just makes me nervous.
so i was wondering if anyone knew anything else about acupuncture that they could share with me?

anything AT ALL would be helpful.

thanks.

I mentioned the weight gain associated with the meds and she told me that we might try ear beads. Just curious if anyone else has tried. BTW – I realize diet and exercise are the best ways to lose weight but when you are on these meds it goes very slow if at all. Just looking for anyone who has tried this. Thanks!

I’m just wondering about anyone else’s experience with this. I think I will have it done again next Wednesday. I have so much going on in my life right now and for the first time in weeks I am able to think about it without having a panic attack.
