Acupuncture
As complementary therapies go, acupuncture is one of the most well respected and researched. Consequently it enjoys wide acceptance in conventional medicine circles and is now routinely recommended by all manner of doctors, nurses and other health professionals. A recent WHO report found it effective for a wide range of symptoms and diseases, such as insomnia, depression, acne, lower back pain and sciatica, along with many others.
While the theories and language of Traditional Chinese Medicine may not be accepted by Western doctors, there is little doubt that acupuncture works and practitioners are relatively easy to find. There are 2 main types of acupuncture generally practiced in the West today, with subdivisions in each. These are the Traditional Schools and the so called Medical Acupuncture. The 1st is the holistic, oriental therapy that comes from China, the 2nd is a Westernised version used purely on a physical level. Medical acupuncture is normally practiced by Western medical practitioners such as GPs, physiotherapists or nurses. It is used mainly for pain relief and practitioners have only the bare minimum of training. This is in contrast with the Traditional approach which takes years of training and follows the Chinese medical system, and works on physical, mental and emotional levels.

Probably the most common psychological problem associated with insomnia is depression. A fundamental link exists between the two that goes beyond the chemical factors secreted by the brain in various nervous central system disorders. Depression and insomnia are actually connected by the presence of negative thoughts directed towards oneself and the rest of the world. Personal dissatisfaction, emotional problems and high-stress working conditions are the typical causes. The most significant disadvantage in the use of classical medication prescribed for the treatment of these two ailments is its inability to solve the root causes triggering the condition in the first place. As a result, further recurrence is very likely when the prescription is finished.
People who suffer from depression and insomnia are encouraged to develop as many rewarding activities as possible. Boosts of confidence, small successes, communication and openness, as well as emotional stability are among the best long-term cures for such disorders. Most nervous system problems are associated with insomnia, from the very simple to the most complex of cases, and fortunately depression is generally considered a mild affliction that can be treated by various means that are complemented by classical therapy. Acupuncture and acupressure, for instance, have been successfully used in the treatment of both depression and insomnia, with positive results obvious immediately after the sessions.

Depression can affect up to about 16% of the population of the United States. While it some cases it is rather mild, others are not so fortunate.
Treatment of some kind, in the more extreme cases, is usually necessary in order to help the individual cope with ordinary life. This article explains how acupuncture may help you or someone you know get relief from depression.
What Are the Primary Causes of Depression?
Depression can often stem from basic biologic insufficiencies. It can stem from such things as simple as a lack of a balanced diet, insufficient vitamins and minerals, or, a lack of physical exercise.
Most remedies for depression will include an examination of the life to see if these are properly maintained, because they are necessary to our mental well being. Apart from these more ordinary things, hormonal imbalances, and mental instabilities can also cause it.
In order to detect if this is the case, it will be necessary to see your doctor for further consultation and testing.
Acupuncture May Be Helpful
While acupuncture is still new and unusual to many Americans, it has been used in China for well over 2,000 years. They have enjoyed its benefits as a recognized source of help for many physical problems. Among other things, it has been used to help those with depression.
Acupuncture in the United States
The Food and Drug Administration gave acupuncture official status of being a viable means for medical treatment in 1996. As early as 2002, there were about 8.2 million Americans that had received acupuncture treatments. There are now more than 20,000 certified acupuncturists in this country, and more than a third of these also medical doctors.
The Principles of Acupuncture
The Chinese believe that the human body has 12 main points of intersection through which the natural energy of the body flows. This energy is referred as QI (or chi).
When energy flows freely throughout the body you experience health. Illness, or depression, would indicate a blocked or insufficient flow of energy.
The purpose of acupuncture treatment for depression is to help restore the proper flow of QI so the body can function properly.
An interpretation of all this, in the language of Western science, is that it helps to stimulate the central nervous system. Acupuncture treatment releases endorphins, the body’s pain-relieving chemicals.
Acupuncture’s ability to release endorphins may be one of the main ways it can help relieve depression. These chemical messengers may stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms to help restore normal mood.
Acupuncture Has Been Shown To Help Depression
When the alternatives to depression are considered – strong drugs, acupuncture may be something that you might want to try. The drugs have many side effects including drowsiness, headaches, lower levels of interest in sex, and anxiety.
Clinical studies (though more need to be done) have shown that acupuncture does provide measurable benefits. And one of the best things is that there acupuncture does not have any side effects.
The only “side effect” of acupuncture is some mild discomfort from the needles. Other forms of acupuncture now use low power lasers – which have the same effect without using needles.
Acupuncture May Even Be Covered By Your Insurance
About 80% of health insurance companies will now accept acupuncture as a means for medical treatment of many disorders. You may want to look at your policy and see if it covers you.

Women have a much harder time with depression symptoms than their male counterparts. Depression hits women for more reasons and during times when they cannot always do something about it. That includes when they are pregnant. A pregnant woman, whose hormones levels are going off in all directions, cannot take antidepressants. It could have a detrimental effect on the baby that is growing inside of them. Depression is something that way too many people fight daily. If there is another way to treat depression without the use of unending antidepressants, antipsychotic, and mood enhancers many people will choose that alternative. One alternative method presented to people for depression has been acupuncture.
There are many non-believers in the scientific and medical fields. They do not see how acupuncture can do anything to help those who suffer from depression. Studies are turning up with very different results. Studies have shown that since acupuncture in itself is a relaxing treatment it leads the way in alternative medicine in helping people deal with depression. One study showed sixty six percent of those women treated, after a routine of several weeks of acupuncture sessions, felt better and functioned better after treatment. Follow up visits showed that these women dealt better with their daily lives and the people in it.
